Defiant: Louis Van Gaal
Jochan Embley21 October 2014

Louis Van Gaal has admitted he is “arrogant” and still believes Manchester United can win the Premier League title, despite being 10 points off leaders Chelsea.

United snatched a draw against West Brom at the Hawthorns on Monday night, with substitute Marouane Fellaini and Daley Blind cancelling out strikes from Stephane Sessegnon and Saido Berahino.

And despite the draw, which leaves Van Gaal’s side just one point better off than David Moyes’ were after this many games last season, the Dutchman is still confident for the remainder of the campaign.

“Call me arrogant but we can still catch Chelsea,” Van Gaal said. “I have done it before.

“It is two points lost. I think we were the better team.

“I am very disappointed about the result. I don’t think West Bromwich Albion has created many chances, I think zero, and we gave the two goals away.

“We have created four chances in the first half and seven in the second half. I am happy about our playing style but not happy about the result.”

United will welcome Chelsea to Old Trafford on Sunday knowing that a win can bring them to within seven points of Jose Mourinho’s side – and Van Gaal believes the gap could get smaller still.

“That’s possible but it is difficult to say,” he said. “But I am arrogant because I have done it a lot of times.

“We have to look also for physical talents and maybe that’s our problem.

“I’m a coach who is always thinking about creative players but in England you also need physical bodies and Fellaini is one of these.

“He made a very good substitution but he’s always injured and we have to build him up.”
