Tottenham will begin a new era under Antonio Conte tonight after the Italian was cleared to take charge of the match against Vitesse Arnhem.

Conte this morning received his work visa and will be joined by his backroom staff in the dugout for the Europa Conference League game at a packed Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Conte has observed training over the last two days, with academy coach Ryan Mason leading the sessions, but the new Spurs boss has already been influential in determining team structure and approach.

"He tries to give us a lot of information about the structure he wants to put in the team," club captain Hugo Lloris said yesterday. "Then as players we have to deliver his expectations."

Conte will pick the XI and could immediately switch to a back-three, which would appear a good fit for this Spurs squad.

The head coach will only be without Ryan Sessegnon and Bryan Gil, who worked inside yesterday while the rest of the squad trained, and could name a strong team, with Conte likely to want to play Harry Kane and Heung-min Son into form ahead of Sunday’s visit to Everton.

Under both Jose Mourinho and Nuno, Spurs tended to underperform in mid-week European matches, including in a 1-0 defeat at Arnhem last month in one of Nuno’s last games in charge.

Lloris has warned the squad that they must not waste the opportunity of working under a coach of Conte’s pedigree.

"Honestly he is the kind of manager who will help all the players to improve and all the club to improve," said the goalkeeper. "His CV speaks for itself.

"It’s a massive opportunity for u to work under that kind of manager but when you have the opportunity, you have to take it.

"And all together, step by step, we’re going to try to reach the level that has to be ours. And hopefully we are going to have better days ahead of us.

"We are looking to find consistency in our performances and our results – we don’t want to see ups and downs," Lloris added.

"For that we need to give our best every day. Every training session matters. It’s related to performance at the weekend and we need to be more demanding of each other in every single session, to make sure we are ready to compete during competitive games."

Toby Alderweireld, who left Spurs for Qatari side Al-Duhail over the summer, will be at the stadium tonight to say goodbye to Spurs fans.
