Antonio Conte insisted Tottenham must match his ambition after Saturday’s 3-2 defeat to Manchester United.

The Spurs manager was adamant that he was happy at the club – and believed his side showed their potential with their performance at Old Trafford.

But he made it clear that he remains hungry to win trophies and is not prepared to give up those ambitions.

A Cristiano Ronaldo hat-trick left Spurs seventh in the table and five points adrift of Champions League qualification.

Conte said: “Every day I like to go to the training ground and work with these players. I am having a fantastic experience because I’m enjoying my time in Tottenham.

“For sure it is a different situation if I compare to my past. In the past I fought to win the title or trophies. This is a big new challenge. But people can see very well the commitment that I am doing, putting in at the training ground with my staff.

“I always say that I have impatience. I like to work - at the same time I want to be very clear I don’t want to lose ambition. This must be very clear. I repeat I hope we are in the same way.”

Conte hailed Ronaldo’s performance after the 37-year-old rolled back the years with a vintage performance.

“I know him very well,” said the Italian. “It’s not a surprise for me. We are talking about a player that, with [Lionel] Messi, they are the best players in the world.

“We are talking about a player that’s decisive. In the moment the team needed him he was always present.

“I remember the Champions League group and he was decisive for United getting to the next round. He’s a player that feels this type of game. We can see a fantastic player.

“For sure it is a great compliment to him because to arrive at this age with this form, mentality, desire to win, you have to give all the great compliments.”
