Andre Villas-Boas can stay in charge of Chelsea for 15 years, says Buck

11 April 2012

Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck hopes manager Andre Villas-Boas can emulate the longevity of Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger.

The 33-year-old is the seventh manager to have been employed by owner Roman Abramovich since he bought the club in 2003.

It is in stark contrast to rivals Manchester United and Arsenal where Ferguson and Wenger have been in charge for 25 and 15 years respectively.

Buck believes that Villas-Boas can have a similarly lengthy reign and said: "We do envy Arsene Wenger at Arsenal and Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United in terms of longevity but it shouldn't be longevity for longevity's sake.

"It has to be the right guy in the job for 10 or 15 years and, in light of Andre's age, he may well be that guy. Everyone thinks his age might be a negative but it's a positive.

"He has really been able to relate to the players. He is a very organised guy who understands football."

Villas-Boas has the task of rebuilding an ageing squad and Buck admits the club have to produce more players from their academy.

John Terry remains the only major success and he made his debut in 1998. Buck told BBC Radio 5 Live: "The problem has been transfer fees paid to other clubs for new players and that's probably our biggest expense.

"The way we've tried to attack that, not as successfully as we'd have liked, is by putting money into the academy. If you can bring a player or two through the academy, every couple of years, then you're saving £10m, £20m, £30m of transfer fees."
