Alan Pardew: Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish does not interfere

Right balance: Pardew says things are easier at Palace than at former club Newcastle

Crystal Palace manager Alan Pardew says the support he gets from chairman Steve Parish is a big factor behind the club’s recent progress.

Pardew claims boardroom figures at some clubs are becoming “far too involved” in the football matters but believes they have got the right balance at Palace.

That is in contrast to his four years in charge of Newcastle where Pardew became frustrated working under owner Mike Ashley.

“I have got a great relationship with Steve,” said Pardew. “I admire the way he has conducted his business at this club. He has let the managers get on with it.

“He is hands on sort of chairman so does the financial deals, which suits me. He wants my final say on all the stuff we do with recruitment.

“[At Newcastle] the financial element came first, then the technical side of it. It is difficult to pick up results when you do not think the players are being signed to fit what you want. I was a bit frustrated but I have not got that excuse here [at Palace].”

Pardew was backed by Parish when Palace struggled during the second half of last season and says he is grateful for his support

“He has been very supportive in difficult times,” he told the BBC’s Premier League Show. “I think a good chairman is very important when you lose. We lost [against West Ham] at the weekend. His reaction was very professional. Ok, we did not play very well. He did not really ask me too many reasons why. He expects me to get on with it.”
