Alan Pardew has told ADO Den Haag to keep the survival bonus he is entitled to, and has instead encouraged the club to donate it to the Dutch health service.

Den Haag intented to pay Pardew his £100,000 bonus for keeping the club in the top flight after the season was declared void, and relegation scrapped on Friday.

His team sat seven points from safety in Eredivisie and were almost certain to be in the relegation play-offs before the campaign was ended due to the coronavirus pandemic.

"It was my understanding that this (bonus) clause would only be activated if we had finished the season and ADO had avoided relegation," he said.

"However, on a technicality issue with regard to the way the Dutch season ended, I was informed ADO intended to pay the bonus.

"I immediately contacted the club and told them not to pay me the money and to either give it to the non-playing staff at the club or donate it to Holland's health service to help in their efforts to beat Covid-19."

Pardew was appointed Den Haag boss on a short-term deal in December and tasked with keeping them up.

He added: "I hope to be able to go back to the Hague again soon. Then will be the time for thinking about the [new contract] situation.

"Although we believed we could accomplish our mission, we were not doing well, and will never know if we would have succeeded.

"But because of that I don't think any other outcome would be fair on Den Haag.

"We will count our blessings."
