On an emotionally charged night at AFC Wimbledon’s Kingsmeadow, fierce rivals MK Dons spoiled the party, taking all three points with a resolute 2-0 win in the third league edition of this new-found grudge-match.

An early goal from Ryan Seager and second before the break from Gboly Ariyibi were enough for the Buckinghamshire side, who put in a disciplined defensive performance to shut out League One low-scorers Wimbledon.

With the home support giving both barrels to the visiting players, you would almost forgive Robbie Neilson’s men for struggling to find their feet.

However, with just six minutes on the clock – and against the run of early play – Osman Sow burst down the left and, with a driven cross, found Southampton loanee Seager who repaid his manger’s faith in starting him with a first time finish past George Long in the Dons goal.

Not downhearted by an early goal and buoyed by the boisterous home support, Neal Ardley’s side went in search of an equaliser.

However, after a strong spell of dominance from the hosts, with Andy Barcham causing untold problems down the left, the visitors picked up a rare spell of possession and made matters worse for their rivals.

After an ugly scramble on the penalty spot, after which Wimbledon were unable to clear their lines, Ariyibi was on hand to pick up the pieces and finish for a second.

The hosts put in a valiant effort after the break, with forward Lyle Taylor denied a fine goal when MK shot-stopper Lee Nicholls tipped his volley over the bar.

The ‘keeper would foil Taylor once again when, after the ball struck the arm of defender Scott Golboure in Nicholl’s penalty area, the 24-year-old produced an excellent diving save to preserve his clean sheet.

The result keeps MK Dons above Ardley’s men who are left with just two league wins so far this season, making their trip to fellow strugglers Southend next weekend all the more important.
