AC Milan 1-2 Liverpool: Mo Salah and Divock Origi ensure Reds maintain perfect Champions League record

Matt Verri7 December 2021

Divock Origi and Mo Salah got the goals as Liverpool beat AC Milan 2-1 at the San Siro to make it six wins out of six in the Champions League group stage.

Fikayo Tomori put the Italian side, who needed a win to have any chance of making the knockout stages, in front in the first-half, but Liverpool turned it around to deny a poor Milan team.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are the first English side to finish the group stage with a perfect record, and they will be a feared team when the competition resumes in February.

The Liverpool boss made eight changes from the Reds’ last match, with qualification and top spot already secured, though Salah and Sadio Mane both started.

Milan made a slow start considering how much was riding on it for them, but they took the lead after 29 minutes.

The corner was swung in and Takumi Minamino moved away at the near post, letting the ball through across the face of goal. Alisson parried it out into the six-yard box, and Tomori was there for a simple finish.

But Liverpool were level within seven minutes as Salah struck once again. He cushioned home the rebound after Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s shot was saved, for his 20th goal of the season in all competitions.

The home side were slightly improved after the break, but they fell behind ten minutes into the second-half.

Sadio Mane’s shot from a tight angle was saved, and Divock Origi, the hero for Liverpool against Wolves on the weekend, was in the box to head his side in front.

Milan started to push in the last five minutes, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic shooting at will and Franck Kessie having an effort well saved by Alisson, but it was all too late from the Italians.

Liverpool saw the match out for a comfortable win to maintain their perfect record, with Milan finishing bottom of the group as Atletico Madrid beat Porto to snatch second place and their spot in the last 16.
