Fittler may play in Super League

Brad Fittler, Australia's rugby league World Cup captain, agonised over whether to play in our Super League next summer.

'I was close to signing for one of your clubs for the next couple of seasons before Sydney Roosters came up with a new three-year deal and I decided to stay,' said the brilliant stand off.

Wigan Warriors and Leeds Rhinos tried to persuade the 28-year-old to join the exodus of top players from the Southern Hemisphere and if Sydney had won the NRL Grand Final this year one of them would have been given the nod.

Fittler finished up a loser, for once in his glittering career, and the unfulfilled ambition to captain a Grand Final-winning side was enough to keep him in Australia.

But three years down the track, he believes he could be on his way to Super League.

'I will come over at the end of my Sydney contract,' promised Fittler, who has won 34 caps for his country. His ambition for the moment is making sure Australia retain the World Cup.

'I don't intend to be the first Australia captain to lose a World Cup final for nearly 30 years,' he vowed.
