The FIA have upheld the result of the 2019 Canadian Grand Prix after Ferrari lost their review into Sebastian Vettel's controversial time penalty in Montreal.

Vettel finished first at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve on June 9, but was demoted to runner-up behind Lewis Hamilton after being handed a costly five-second time penalty for what was deemed to be an unsafe return to the track.

Ferrari began discussions at the Paul Ricard Circuit in France on Friday, offering what they called “significant” new evidence of no wrongdoing on the part of their driver.

However, after assessing Ferrari's evidence, Formula One's governing body threw out their challenge.

A statement from the FIA read: "There are no significant and relevant new elements which were unavailable to the parties at the time of the competition concerned."

The FIA's verdict means Hamilton heads into Sunday's French Grand Prix 62 points clear of Vettel in the championship.

"It not a surprise," said Vettel. "We don't share the opinion of the stewards during the race. We thought we could bring something new.

"It is disappointing that it doesn't go further, but that is it, and we have to move on."
