Ferrara scores winner to save Juve's blushes

14 April 2012

Juventus had to work hard for their 2-1 Champions League win over Galatasaray, with veteran defender Ciro Ferrara scoring the 73rd-minute winner.

Watched by a crowd of only 14,000 in Turin, Alessandro del Piero put the Italians in front after five minutes when he hooked home a right-wing cross from Mauro Camoranesi. But their Turkish opponents levelled 14 minutes later with a header from Hakan Suker.

Del Piero struck the bar with a 66th-minute free-kick and then set up the winner for 36-year-old Ferrara, who got the faintest of touches to beat goalkeeper Farid Mondragon.

Real Sociedad, runners-up to Real Madrid in the Spanish League last season, also won in Group D but they had to wait until the 80th minute for Darko Kovacevic to score the one goal of the game from the penalty spot.

Coach Raynald Denoueix said: "Getting three points from our first game was really important. It means that we are now in with a chance of getting through to the next stage."
