Fergie taunts rich-boy Blues

14 April 2012

Sir Alex Ferguson has claimed Chelsea will never match Manchester United's standing in world football despite the London club's wealth and success this season.

Chelsea are on course for the Barclays Premiership title, are through to the last eight of the Champions League and have already won the Carling Cup.

But Ferguson, who has also revealed he has no plans to retire from management, feels it is United who still command the most interest.

"Chelsea played Barcelona last week but all the attention was on our game with AC Milan," said Ferguson.

"We are global with millions of fans all over the world, in Europe America and Asia. Manchester United is more than football," quotes The Sun.

Ferguson has been in charge at Old Trafford for 19 years and even though Chelsea are in the ascendancy at the moment the Scot's record is second to none.

Under his stewardship the club have won the Champions League, European Cup Winners Cup, eight Premiership titles, five FA Cups and one League Cup.

The 63-year-old initially planned to retire at the end of the 2001-2002 season but changed his mind and is still not considering standing down.

Ferguson moves onto a new one-year rolling contract in June when his current three-year deal expires.

"I am willing to stay on. We are building a new great team," he said in an interview with Portuguese magazine Visao, posted on BBC Online.

"We have some of the best talent in the world and some youngsters who will be sure bets in this game and also this business. Why would I retire?

"Sometimes I ask: 'Do I still have energy?' But then I look to my side and I see businessmen in their 80s, full of energy, clarity and strength who continue to work and I think: 'If they, at 82 can, why can't I at 63?'"
