Fergie keen to hand Rooney role on bench

13 April 2012

Sir Alex Ferguson is planning to give Wayne Rooney a run-out before Manchester United face Inter Milan next week.

The England striker sat out yesterday's 4-1 FA Cup win over Derby at Pride Park with the hamstring injury he picked up against Wigan a month ago.

However, with the Champions League knock-out round clash at the San Siro a week tomorrow, Ferguson is keen for Rooney to be on the bench in one of two games before then.

"It might be against Fulham on Wednesday but if not, definitely against Blackburn on Saturday," said the United boss.

Ferguson confirmed midfielder Darron Gibson, 21, who scored the second goal would face Tottenham in the Carling Cup Final.

"He has got into the team for Wembley with that performance," said the manager.
