Fergie hopes to build on great start

12 April 2012

Sir Alex Ferguson believes Manchester United can build on their superb start to the season with four successive victories coming in difficult circumstances.

The Old Trafford manager will be looking for his side to extend their unbeaten start on Wednesday when they face Celtic in the Champions League. Tottenham were United's latest victims on Saturday thanks to a goal from Ryan Giggs.

Ferguson said: "Our critics have been quick to point out that we won our first three league games last season only to lose one and then draw two of the next three. I would suggest though that there is a totally different background this season."

He added: "Last year I was picking my strongest side when we won the opening fixtures.

"This time we have opened with a run of injuries and suspensions that have seen Gary Neville, Gabriel Heinze, Nemanja Vidic, Wayne Rooney and Paul Scholes on the sidelines.

"Yet we have still won and I take great heart from that."

Ferguson has a double bonus on Wednesday as he welcomes back Rooney and Scholes, who have served three-match domestic suspensions.

Former PSV midfielder Ji-Sung Park is anxious to win back his place in the United side and improve his goals ratio.

"With our recent performances and our confidence I'm sure we can beat any team," he told manutd.com "At PSV I scored more regularly so I am confident I can contribute more goals for United.

"I have discussed it with Sir Alex and he has set that as a target for me."

United will without Cristiano Ronaldo for the Celtic encounter following the suspension he picked up for his parting gesture at Benfica fans in Lisbon last December.
