Federer powers past Ancic

12 April 2012

Top seed Roger Federer was in irresistible mood as he sailed effortlessly into the fourth round of the French Open with a straight-sets win over Mario Ancic on Saturday.

The Swiss turned on the style on Philippe Chatrier court to stroll to a 6-3 6-4 6-2 victory in 95 minutes.

He was majestic at times, with world number 46 Ancic - whose booming serve makes him more at home on the grass of Wimbledon - unable to stop the Federer juggernaut.

The only break of the first set came in the fourth game when Federer, bidding this year to win his first Roland Garros title and complete a Grand Slam of majors, reeled off four straight points from 0-30 down.

He slammed down an ace to clinch the set in 30 mins and the world number one was on his way.

After six straight service holds, Federer clicked into top gear and wowed the crowd with a stunning end to the second set.

He broke in the seventh game thanks to a clever sliced-backhand winner and two stunning forehands, and lost just one more point on his serve to put him two sets up and on the brink.

After being broken by the Swiss in the first game of the third, Ancic - the last player to beat Federer at Wimbledon, just shy of six years ago - trudged back to his seat head down, a beaten man.

Federer broke twice more before completing a stylish win when Ancic slid a backhand drive wide.

Everything looked in perfect working order for Federer, who plays Julien Benneteau next.
