Faulkner books his place in the pool for Athens

14 April 2012

Distance swimmers Adam Faulkner and Graeme Smith booked their Athens places on the first day of the Olympic trials in Sheffield.

Faulkner, of Nottingham's Nova Centurion, touched home first in the 400-metres freestyle after a close encounter with Smith (Stockport Metro) and David Davies (Cardiff), the latter just missing out.

There was also a British record in the men's 100m freestyle by Matt Kidd, while the women's 100m butterfly standard went twice within the space of a few minutes, with Ros Brett - the first British woman to swim sub-60 seconds - being upstaged by previous holder Georgina Lee in the very next heat.
