Fame and glory is still on mind of Jose Maria Olazabal

David Smith13 April 2012

Jose Maria Olazabal insists he can still be a winner despite his election to the World Golf Hall of Fame suggesting others believe his best playing days are done.

The two-time Masters champion, only the second Spaniard after Seve Ballesteros to be granted Hall of Fame membership, has endured a lengthy battle against injury and the last of his 23 European Tour wins was in 2005.

But if the critics are of the opinion that Olazabal is now teeing it up just for fun, they'd better think again. Ahead of his opening round at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth today, Olazabal, 43, said: "The challenge is still to hopefully win an event again.

"That is what has moved me to practice hard and keep on trying. I still have that desire."

Meanwhile, world No2 Phil Mickelson has suspended playing golf indefinitely after his wife, Amy, was diagnosed with breast cancer.
