FA targeting Twickenham for World Cup

13 April 2012

Twickenham has been identified as one of three potential London venues in England's bid to stage the 2018 World Cup.

The Football Association is deciding which grounds to be included in its bid - to be presented to FIFA's executive committee later this year - and the home of rugby, recently rebuilt and extended to an 82,000 capacity, is under consideration.

FIFA has made it clear that each city in the bid can have up to three stadiums. Wembley Stadium will be the centrepiece, with Twickenham and Arsenal's Emirates Stadium favourites to fill the other slots for London.

The move would mean a first football match played at Twickenham and Andy Anson, chief executive of England's 2018 bid, is hoping to discuss the idea at an upcoming meeting with RFU officials.
