FA Cup final to revert back to end of season

The Football Association have decided that the FA Cup final will return to its customary position as the climax to the football season.

And the Premier League have also followed tradition by pushing back the start of the new season to 17 August. This followed criticism that this season started too early.

It was also decided at yesterday's fixtures working party meeting that the 2002-2003 final will take place on Saturday May 17, a week after the conclusion of the Premiership.

The final had been played on the penultimate weekend of the season for the past two years.
