Exclusive: Sven to be sacked by Man City before taking up Mexico job

13 April 2012

Sven Goran Eriksson will be sacked by Manchester City this weekend, Sportsmail understands.

And the former England boss will return to international management by officially being named Mexico's head coach on Monday.

The Swede had widely been expected to leave Eastlands after being criticised by City's Thai owner Thaksin Shinawatra.

Strained relationship: Sven Goran Eriksson and City owner Thaksin Shinawatra haven't been seeing eye to eye

And after leading the club's tour of the Far East, Thaksin is understood to have decided to part company with Eriksson, despite impressing City fans by leading them to ninth in the Barclays Premier League last season after uncovering some impressive recruits.

However, the former Lazio, Sampdoria and Benfica chief will walk straight into a new job with the Mexican national team.

The North American country revealed on Tuesday that Eriksson would be named their new boss ahead of Portugal coach Luiz Felipe Scolari.

Thaksin is thought to be interested in filling the vacancy with Scolari, but is likely to be turned down by the much-admired Brazilian.

Sacked Chelsea boss Avram Grant is a more likely target. It has been claimed that former Thai prime minister Thaksin has already met Grant’s agent Pini Zahavi.

Speaking earlier this week, Mexican Football Federation president Justino Compean said: "We only seriously considered Scolari and Eriksson. We've sorted out the details with Eriksson and we are about to confirm him."
