Everton's Kane ends Arsenal Ladies' dominance

13 April 2012

Amy Kane scored the only goal as Everton ended Arsenal's 58-game winning run to lift the women's Premier League Cup on Thursday night.

Everton took their shock lead in the seventh minute at Brisbane Road when Jill Scott broke down the right and squared it for Kane to strike low past Emma Byrne.

The goalscorer was perhaps lucky to stay on the pitch later in the first half after launching a two-footed tackle at an opponent.

Arsenal, who had won every game since losing the final of this competition 2-1 to Charlton in 2006, tested the Everton defence with a concerted spell of pressure.

Kelly Smith twice went close, first firing narrowly over and then dropping a lob under the crossbar only for Everton's Emily Westwood to head off the line via the woodwork.

The underdogs held on in the second half, with Julie Fleeting missing a free header from eight yards in the last 10 minutes.
