Euro chief in snub to Liverpool

Liverpool's hopes of playing in next season's Champions League suffered a major blow today when a UEFA executive committee member said it was too late to change the rules to accommodate the holders.

Pressure has increased on UEFA in the past week to include the Reds in next season's competition following their stunning penalty shoot-out triumph over AC Milan.

The issue will be resolved by UEFA's 15-man executive committee at their meeting in Manchester on 17 June but Dr Joseph Mifsud, a member since 1994, said: "We should follow the rules. As the rules stand we cannot do anything and I don't agree regulations can be changed midway through the season. As far as I can see it is too late."
