Euro 2008 quarter-final: Holland v Russia

Russia manager Guus Hiddink breaks the hearts of his home nation to become the hero of Russia. Russia comprehensively outplayed the much-fancied Dutch and will face Spain or Italy in the semi-finals. Russia's Arshavin and Pavlyuchenko wreaked havoc up front while Holland stars Van Nistelrooy and Van Persie were squeezed out of the game by some great, resolute defending.



30 FULL-TIME

29 Arshavin sprints after a long ball but De Jong just gets a toe in.

26 GOAL!!! Russia again!!! Arshavin has won it, surely  - what a sweet shot from an acute angle. The playmaker  picks up the ball on the edge of the area on the right side, dribbles towards goal and nutmegs the great Van Der Sar. What great effort by the Russians.

24 Russia sub: Pavlyuchenko off, Sychev on.

22 GOAL and it's Russia's Torbinski! Arshavin crosses from the left, it loops over Van Der Sar and Torbinski gets in on the blindside to slot it home. Torbinski will miss the next game but he's done the business tonight.

20 YELLOW CARD for Torbinski

18 It's all Russia so far - Zyryanov charges down his left and cuts back to Torbinski  who misses it. Pavlyuchenko collects on the far side but his shot goes over. Holland being outplayed.

15 HALF-TIME

13 YELLOW CARD for Russia's Zhirkov for bundling Van Persie off the ball rather clumsily.

11 Free-kick to Russia 35-yards out, slightly over on the right and it's going to be Kolodin to take. It's a great drive but it just goes wide of Van Der Sar's left post.

9 What a chance - Arshavin weaves his way down the right and crosses to Torbinski lurking on the 6-yard box, but he rushes his shot and Van Der Sar saves.

6 Fabulous hit by Pavlyuchenko from out wide on the left - beats Van Der Sar for pace and slams into the cross bar.

5 Van Nistelrooy links up with Van Persie in the middle who goes for goal but Ignashevich takes the sting off the ball and Akinfeyev collects.

3 Van Nistelrooy strikes from just outside the area but his shot is high.

1 Great play by Sneijder on the left to find space - he shoots but it goes straight into the keeper's arms.

FULL TIME - IT'S EXTRA-TIME

90 Russia's Kolodin tackles Sneijder who goes flying - is it a red card? He's given a yellow, but it's retracted after referee Michel consults with the linesman.

85 GOAL - Holland saved by Van Nistelrooy - Sneijder's left-side free-kick is inch-perfect and finds the former United striker in the 6-yard box who heads in at the far post.

82 Zhirkov breaks the offside trap but cuts the ball back instead of shooting and  Torbinski slices his shot wide.

81 Russia sub: Saenko on, Torbinski off.

80 It's Sneijder again from distance but his flighted shot is saved.

75 Sneijder drives from 20-yards, but his fierce shot goes wide.

71 YELLOW CARD for Russia's Kolodin on Van Nistelrooy. Free-kick to be taken by Van Persie on the edge of the area - his effort goes high and wide. Kolodin will miss the next game.

69 Russia sub: Semshov off, Bilyaletdinov on.

67 Anyukov shoots from a difficult angle but Van Der Sar saves.

64 Heitinga goes off for treatment to his chin, so Russia are exploiting their left side.

61 Holland sub: Affelay on, Engelaar off. Van Basten has played all his cards.

57 GOAL. Russia's Semak dashes down the left but Heitinga is slow to pick up his run. Cross goes in and Pavlyuchenko puts it away on the volley.

54 YELLOW CARD for Holland's Van Persie for elbowing Zyryanov. Russia free-kick and Arshavin goes close - just wide of Van Der Sar's far post.

52 Holland sub: Boulahrouz off, Heitinga on.

48 YELLOW CARD for Holland's Boulahrouz. - Russia's Arshavin bundled off the ball.

47 Russia's Semak goes down under a clash with Van Nistelrooy.

45 Van Persie has a chance. Sneijder is the providerf with a lofted pass but the Arsenal striker volleys wide.

43 Akinfeev called into action to beat away an effort from Van der Vaart.

37 Sharp turn and shot from Van Nistelrooy  and Akinfeev makes a smart save.

31 Van der Sar pushes away an Arshavin before Kolodin goes close with two outrageous, long-range efforts.

29 Holland go close. Van der Vaart sends in a superb in-swinger free kick from the left, van Nistelrooy gets away from marker  and is inches away from adding the finishing touch.

25 First corner for Holland. The ball fans to Kolodin on the left hand edge of the box but he drags his shot across the goal.

19 Russia get in a mess just outside the own box and Sneijder nips in with a deft touch but his strike is blocked by Ignashevich.

17 Holland have a rare chance to test the Russian defence but van der Vaart fails to take advantage as he fires his free kick too close to the keeper.

15 Zhirkov has another chance to trouble the Dutch defence but this time he gets too much on his free kick and he sends it high and wide.

8 Great chance for Russia. Semshov breaks free down the right and crosses to  Pavluchenko, unmarked in the centre of goal, but he directs his header over the bar. Hiddink grimaces at the effort.

6 Russia respond with Zhirkov's free kick which has van der Sar scrambled across his line to push round the post and a speculative 30-yard strike from Kolodin which takes a wicked deflection for a corner.

3 Bright start by both sides. Holland create the first opening. Van Bronckhorst wins the ball on the left, sends in a deep cross but Kuyt fails to get a clean contact and he directs his header wide.

19.45 Russia kick off

Holland coach Marco van Basten included Khalid Boulahrouz, whose prematurely-born baby daughter died in the week, at right-back in his team to face Russia in their Euro 2008 quarter-final on Saturday.

The Dutch team will all wear black armbands as a sign of respect to the player and his family following the tragedy.    

Van Basten has returned to his first choice starting line-up as expected for the match at St Jakob Park.    

The Dutch coach had made nine changes to his team for their last Group C match against Romania with qualification for the quarter-finals already assured.

Russia's Dutch coach Guus Hiddink has made one change to the side that beat Sweden 2-0 in their final Group D game.

He has brought in midfielder Ivan Saenko for Diniyar Bilyaletdinov. Saenko came on as a substitute for Bilyaletdinov in Russia's last two group matches against Greece and Sweden.
