England will look after Wilko - Fletcher

12 April 2012

Jonny Wilkinson's club boss is confident England will not take any unnecessary risks with their star fly-half in Saturday evening's RBS 6 Nations clash in Ireland.

Newcastle rugby director John Fletcher believes Wilkinson, who faces a late fitness test on a hamstring strain, is in good hands.

Asked whether he had any concerns over his player's handling, he said: "No, because they're good people. They're professional people and they'll do the right thing."

Fletcher inadvertently became involved in the club-versus-country row in the past fortnight when he took issue with those who believed Wilkinson was rested from the Falcons game at Bristol on Sunday.

The Falcons boss insisted his number 10 was carrying an injury from his Six Nations exertions and claimed he would have picked him if fit.

Should Wilkinson fail to make it, his place looks certain to be taken by Newcastle team-mate Toby Flood.

Fletcher is in no doubt the 21-year-old will not be fazed by stepping into a high-pressure environment at Croke Park.

"He's been doing it week in, week out for us," Fletcher said. "The one thing he lacks is experience. You only get that through playing. It's not a bad experience mind, in front of 84,000 Irishmen."
