England to ring changes as they close in on semi-final spot at Netball World Cup

Pressure off: Serena Guthrie during Monday's win over Jamaica

England look set to shake up their side for Wednesday's Netball World Cup pool match against Trinidad & Tobago with a semi-final berth almost secure.

A 56-48 victory over Jamaica left them top of their group with three wins from as many matches, and captain Serena Guthrie said the result would allow them to try out different permutations.

“It’s a massive pressure off in a competition like this,” said Guthrie.

“If we’d lost to Jamaica, the pressure would have been on. We can now afford to do things like rest people, mix up combos and work on some new things.

“We go into the day off with a little bit less pressure and can enjoy the tournament a bit more.”

Guthrie described tomorrow’s match for the World Cup hosts as the first real test. It will also mean a 100th cap for Eboni Usoro-Brown, who said the backing for the home side had been increasing with every pool match played and called for it to be ramped up further.

“The crowd has been absolutely phenomenal,” she said. “I feel like it’s been getting bigger and bigger each match.

“The moment we walk out the support is absolutely electrifying and it really does help us on court so hopefully it will continue through the rest of the competition.

“But we are grateful for each and every one of those fans that are turning up or tuning in to support us.”
