England start run chase brightly

13 April 2012
LATEST SCORE: England second innings 85-0 (CLOSE)
Pakistan 403 and 323, England 357

England have been set a daunting target of 370 to win the second Test against Pakistan at Old Trafford, and with it the series. But after 22 overs of their second innings, the home side are looking in a promising position, with openers Michael Atherton and Marcus Trescothick closing out the fourth day's play at 85-0.

Trescothick left the field two runs short of his half century, on a day that otherwise saw Pakistan gradually take control of the match. The vistors were eventually bowled out for a commendable second innings total of 323, with Inzamam ul-Haq and Yousuf Yohana doing the most damage, scoring 85 and 49 respectively before they were out in quick succession after lunch.

Inzamam, who made a brilliant century in the first innings, was first to go. He was caught by Trescothick off Matthew Hoggard's bowling.

Then Youhana was controversially dismissed six balls later. Andy Caddick delivered a high bouncing ball which struck Youhana on the helmet, and Atherton took a good catch at first slip.

Youhana shook his head in disbelief when he was given out.

Another controversial decision saw Younis Khan given out lbw to Dominic Cork for 17 with the score on 232.

Television replays showed that Younis got an inside edge on to his pads.

But Younis accepted the decision with good grace as he left the field.

There was no controversy about Azhar Mahmood's dismissal on 14. Caddick's full-length delivery shattered his stumps.

Next to go was Rashid Latif, caught by Atherton off the bowling of Hoggard for 25.

Darren Gough then clean-bowled Wasim Akram for 36 before Saqlain Mushtaq skied a catch to Alec Stewart on five to end the innings.

Waqar Younis was not out on 14.
