England make slow progress

England made slow progress in their pursuit of a debut win for Test captain Kevin Pietersen at the Brit Oval.

Openers Andrew Strauss and Alastair Cook ground their way to 10 without loss on the final morning against South Africa, after resuming in search of 197 for victory.

Just eight balls were possible on Sunday evening before rain swept into London.

Having failed to score off any of those, the first-wicket duo got going on Monday morning when Cook dispatched a pull to the boundary off Makhaya Ntini.

Fellow left-hander Strauss got off the mark with a clip off the pads for four from the bowling of Morne Morkel.

But Strauss' wretched form was so nearly extended when he tucked another ball from Morkel to the on side, to be caught at leg gully, only for umpire Aleem Dar to call no-ball.
