England coach applied for Baggies job

14 April 2012

West Brom have confirmed England and Middlesbrough coach Steve Round applied for the vacant managerial position at The Hawthorns but then withdrew his interest.

Albion, who are seeking a replacement for Bryan Robson after the former England captain was sacked last week, said they had been contacted by Round's agent and had arranged a meeting, only for the arrangements to fall through.

Coventry also claimed they have rejected an approach from West Brom for their manager Micky Adams.

A statement released by the Baggies said: "The club were contacted by Steve Round's agent, Colin Gordon, last week, regarding the vacant manager's job.

"After talking to Middlesbrough manager Gareth Southgate, the club arranged to meet Round as part of its process of compiling a shortlist for the vacancy.

"The meeting did not take place after Gordon withdrew Round's application.

"The club does not regard this as a setback in its process of appointing a new manager as Round was but one of more than 30 serious applicants for the position.

"Furthermore, without speaking to him, the club does not know whether Round would have made the shortlist.

"The club's timescale for appointing a new manager remains on course and the board is fully focused on this at the moment.

"The possible appointment of a sporting and technical director is not connected with the managerial vacancy.

"Since the post of sporting and technical director was advertised in July, several candidates have been interviewed but one-one has been offered the job."

Coventry today claimed Albion's approach for their boss, Micky Adams, has been rejected.

Coventry managing director Paul Fletcher said: "Micky Adams is an important part of this club and we owe it to our fans and players to keep him here.

"He is doing a magnificent job. At a time when we are looking to move forward, Micky is an integral part of our plans."

Meanwhile, Nigel Pearson remains in caretaker charge at The Hawthorns, where the Baggies play Leeds on Saturday.
