Edwin proves priceless

There was a time when Edwin van der Sar's future at Fulham looked shaky as the West London club tried to cut costs.

His wages - thought to be in the region of £35,000 a week - were deemed too expensive. But yesterday he moved from luxury to priceless with his stunning performance in the goalless draw at Highbury.

"He is world class. We needed the goalkeeper to have a really good performance," said manager Chris Coleman. Van der Sar obliged to leave Thierry Henry and Dennis Bergkamp frustrated by his heroics.

"He played one of his best games," said Bergkamp. "He made some fantastic saves. He is winning points for his team. It wasn't as if we played badly. It was just one of those games."

Henry added: "We had a lot of opportunities but Edwin was doing what he does best."

Moritz Volz, on loan from Arsenal until next month, was another key man for Fulham and Coleman said: "We are in talks to keep him here."
