Driver trouble as Lee settles for second

Lee Westwood was not too downhearted after losing out in a play-off to Ernie Els in the Nedbank Golf Challenge in Sun City.

New European No1 Westwood was denied the £1.3million first prize after the pair finished level on 20-under-par at 266 and had to settle for the £200,000 runners-up cheque.

Westwood admitted: "I'm not really disappointed. If you'd offered me 20-under before we started, I'd have taken it.

"My driving was wayward and that was partly due to my damaged driver. I got it fixed, but it wasn't right. I'll go home and tinker with a few other drivers and hope-fully find one that suits me for next season."

Els claimed that holing the putt on the second extra hole to win the richest prize in golf in his homeland had been the most nerve-wracking moment of his career. The 31-year-old South African said: "I don't know how I managed to take back the putter."

Davis Love III fired a final round eight-under-par 64 to storm past world No 1 Tiger Woods and Sergio Garcia to win the Williams World Challenge in California.

Love finished 18-under-par and two shots ahead of Woods, who shot 69, for his first victory in 63 official PGA tournaments.

Overnight leader Garcia, of Spain, had a disastrous 73 to finish third on 271.

A delighted Love said: "Sergio and Tiger also played well this week, but they didn't have a great final round. I beat two guys that have been playing pretty good."

Meanwhile, Hale Irwin added a five-under-par 67 to his opening 68 to win The Bahamas Senior Slam.
