Dokic not put off by swarm of bees

A swarm of bees disrupted play at the Brazil Open but could not prevent the top three women's seeds from reaching the quarterfinals.

The bees descended during the secondround match between second seed Jelena Dokic of Yugoslavia and Iva Majoli of Croatia and play was interrupted for 75 minutes.

"It was a very unusual situation, it's the first time this has happened to me," said Dokic, who breezed to a 6-1, 6-2 victory and will now face American qualifier Samantha Reeves.

"I was not afraid of the bees but was afraid to lose my concentration,"Dokic added. The swarm nested behind the chair of umpire Laura Ceccarelli, who halting play. "It was a very weird situation," referee Paolo Oliveira said.

Dokic was joined in the last eight by top seed Monica Seles of the US, third seed Amanda Coetzer of South Africa, fifth seed Slovakia's Henrieta Nagyova and No 8 Tatiana Panova of Russia.

In the men's event, Britain's Martin Lee lost 6-2, 6-2 to secondseeded Argentine Guillermo Canas in the second round.
