Diaz too strong for Morales

12 April 2012

David Diaz stopped Erik Morales from becoming the first Mexican fighter to win world title belts in four weight classes as he successfully defended his WBC lightweight crown with a unanimous points decision.

Judge Herminio Cuevas gave the fight to Diaz by a score of 114-113, Robert Hecko scored the bout 115-113 and Nobuaki Uratani had the American winning by a 115-112 margin.

Born and raised in nearby Chicago, Diaz (33-1-1, 17 KOs) was defending his title for the first time since stopping Jose Armando Santa Cruz last year.

On the undercard, Ulises Solis retained his IBF light-flyweight title with an eighth-round knockout of Rodel Mayol.

Mexican Solis (25-1-2, 19 KOs) improved to 7-0-1 in his last eight bouts.
