Diamond days could see our athletes shine

13 April 2012

The Aviva London Grand Prix and British Grand Prix will be part of the IAAF's new Diamond League series of athletics meetings.

In a bid to broaden the sport's worldwide appeal, the IAAF said today they will abandon the Europe-based Golden League at the end of this summer and replace it with the Diamond League, which will also take in Asia and the United States.

Twelve events have signed contracts for the League, including the two-day Crystal Palace meeting and the British Grand Prix, which will be held in Gateshead for the next two years.

UK Athletics chief executive Niels de Vos said: "I am hugely excited by this, which gives athletics a truly global annual showcase. From a British perspective, we are going to be at the heart of the Diamond League. For our athletes it will provide great opportunities to compete in regular top flight competition as we build towards the Olympics in 2012."
