Dawson is ready for all-out war

Matt Dawson faces the man he claimed was South Africa's "thug in chief" when champions London Wasps face Northampton Saints tomorrow.

Northampton now have ex-South African captain Corne Krige in their back row. He was the man who led the Springboks during the violent 2002 defeat by England at Twickenham.

Krige attempted a forearm smash on Dawson but only managed to concuss his team-mate Andre Pretorious.

Many felt it was Saints' decision to sign Krige that led to Dawson's decision to quit the club after 11 years and try his luck with Wasps. Dawson expects "all-out war" in this Premiership clash, but Krige doesn't buy into the theory that he was the reason the No9 left.

Krige said: "I think the reason Matt left was a contractual thing and I would definitely have come to Saints if he had stayed. If we had played together and got to know each other over a few beers, maybe we would've both changed our attitude." Krige was on much better behaviour when England beat South Africa in the World Cup and his performances this season have not suggested a return to the bad old days.

Dawson said: "I can't let the occasion and what's gone on with England get the better of me. I'll admit it will be a little strange for me using the 'away' changing room. I don't know what to expect from Saints fans or my former team-mates, but I must admit I'm really looking forward to it.

"While for 80 minutes it will be all-out war, I know I will definitely be catching up with some old mates and supporters after the game."
