Curbishley considers Bak move

Leo Spall13 April 2012

Charlton manager Alan Curbishley is considering a move for Poland's Jacek Bak.

The 28-year-old defender has been made available by French side Lyon and Curbishley is set to take him on loan with a view to a permanent deal.

The Charlton manager has been looking to add to his squad since centre-back Richard Rufus damaged knee ligaments and was ruled out until February.

However, Andy Todd's fracas with goalkeeper Dean Kiely, which resulted in Todd being placed on the transfer list, has increased the need for Curbishley to find another defender.

The training ground bust-up last week left Kiely with facial injuries and Curbishley is still not sure whether Todd, 27, will play for the club again.

He was not in the squad which lost 2-0 to Liverpool at The Valley on Saturday and has not taken part in first-team training sessions since the incident.

Curbishley said: "There is no guarantee that Todd is going to go. We will have to see what his reaction is once it has all settled down.

"He has got to apologise. I think I would be receptive to that but it would be much better for everyone if it was face-to-face.

"Andy loves his football and is quite close to some of the players so it was all very disappointing.

"It was an incident that happens once in a blue moon at a football club.

"I have been here for 10 years and I hope I do not have anything like it again in the next 10 years."

Derby manager Colin Todd, Andy's father, is interested in taking him to Pride Park and claimed Charlton had treated the defender unfairly. But Curbishley had a three-hour meeting with the player, chairman Richard Murray and chief executive Peter Varney last Thursday.

He said: "Colin has reacted like a father not knowing all the facts.

"I spoke to him on Friday and cleared up one or two things. I am a fair minded person and I think Andy got it wrong and he should realise he has got it wrong.

"I looked at all sides. The action we took was the correct one.

"I was a bit disappointed with Colin's comments.

"Anyone who knows me would know I would have assessed all the facts and done everything fairly."

Charlton, whose next game is against Arsenal at Highbury next Sunday, went down to first-half goals from Jamie Redknapp and Michael Owen on Saturday.
