India paceman Zaheer Khan will miss the upcoming three-match Test series in Sri Lanka because of injury.

The 31-year-old is struggling with a shoulder problem and has been told to rest by team doctors.

"Zaheer Khan has been ruled out of the forthcoming Sri Lanka series because of a shoulder injury," Board of Control for Cricket in India secretary N Srinivasan confirmed.

"The All-India Senior Selection Committee has chosen Abhimanyu Mithun to replace him."

The first Test between Sri Lanka and India gets under way in Galle on July 18, in what will be spinner Muttiah Muralitharan's final appearance for the hosts before his retirement from the longest format of the game.
