Shane Watson returns but the Aussies are already sunk

Shane Watson will fly back to India for the final Test but his return after ‘homeworkgate’ is too late for the Aussies.

The vice-captain headed home after he and three team-mates were axed for failing to provide feedback on how the tourists could improve after losing the first two Tests. Dropping the quartet did not aid the Aussies’ cause. They lost the Third Test, and therefore the series, in Mohali by six wickets today and face a whitewash.

“I’ve a burning ambition to be an Australian Test player for as long as I can be,” he said after clear-the-air talks with management prior to the series loss.

Australia began day five on 75 for three and were out for 223. Needing just 133, nervy India scraped home for the loss of four wickets with just 15 deliveries to spare.
