Second Ashes Test weather: Further rain delays expected at Lord's as England plot fightback

The clouds were still hovering over Lord's after Wednesday's disappointing Ashes washout

The second Ashes Test between England and Australia is set to get underway this morning after a first-day washout, but a glance at the weather forecast provokes further fears over the status of the now four-day contest.

After play was abandoned on Wednesday afternoon without a ball being bowled due to the inclement weather in London, it was decided that an extra 30 minutes of play would be allowed at the end of each evening session moving forward in order to cover the shortfall.

And while the forecast for Thursday looks promising in terms of the likelihood of a full day's play, it seems sadly that the rain is destined to return tomorrow.

The Met Office foresees a cloudy morning giving way to "light rain by lunchtime", with a 90% chance of precipitation from 3pm BST right up until midnight.

A sunny start on Saturday looks set to give way to cloudy conditions by late morning, with a 40% chance of rain arriving between 1pm and 4pm.

They currently predict the same chance of rain between 4pm and 10pm on Sunday - the final day of the Test.

England will be hoping that the forecast for the next couple of days proves a lot better than expected as they seek to overturn a 1-0 deficit following a 251-run loss to their rivals at Edgbaston.
