Salman Butt faces hearing after ban appeal

Appeal: Salman Butt
10 April 2012

Salman Butt is trying to overturn his provisional ban from international cricket for his alleged links to a spot-fixing conspiracy.

The Pakistan Test captain, along with his team-mates Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir, was suspended by the International Cricket Council following a newspaper investigation that alleged he was part of a plot for his bowlers to deliver no-balls to order during the Lord's Test against England last month.

Police are investigating the allegations against Butt, Asif and Amir, and ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat said Butt would receive a hearing as soon as possible after appealing against his ban.

Neither Asif nor Amir has yet to take the same steps. Lorgat, meanwhile, has advised Pakistan Board chairman Ijaz Butt to withdraw his allegation that England players were paid to lose the third NatWest Series match against Pakistan at The Brit Insurance Oval.

The England and Wales Cricket Board have written to Butt demanding an apology and threatening legal action but Butt has not backed down.

He is in England and is likely to meet ECB officials.

Lorgat said: "He's got a hugely responsible role. If he has information he should come through our investigators and we have written to him."
