Ricky Ponting hit a century in his final first-class innings today to give Surrey hope of saving their match against Nottinghamshire.

The former Australia skipper reached his ton in the County Championship clash at the Kia Oval by hitting spinner Samit Patel for his 14th four of his innings.

It was the 38-year-old’s 82nd first-class hundred and his second knock of three figures in his short spell at Surrey after he hit 192 on his debut against Derbyshire.

Ponting will not make any more Championship appearances because South Africa’s JP Duminy is due to replace him as Surrey’s overseas player.

The Tasmanian walked off the field to huge applause at the lunch break unbeaten on 108 with his side 282 for five in their second innings, 70 runs ahead of Notts.
