Jason Roy backed himself to break England’s individual one-day batting record after coming within six runs of beating Robin Smith’s 23-year-old mark.

Roy made 162 from 118 deliveries as England beat Sri Lanka by six wickets on Wednesday to seal the Royal London Series, the second-highest total by an England batsman in a one-day game.

It was Roy’s second century of the series, in which England hold a 2-0 lead with one match to play. This one arrived in front of his home crowd at The Kia Oval, following his unbeaten 112 at Edgbaston last week.

“Someone can break that record, 100 per cent” Roy said. “We saw that at Edgbaston and here today.

“It was a great pitch at The Oval, just a remarkable evening. I didn’t know I was approaching the record score, but I just want to keep performing in big games with this team.

“The boys let me enjoy myself and play how I want to play. I don’t worry if I get out in the first over because I know the boys are backing me. It’s an incredible dressing room to be part of at the moment.”

England captain Eoin Morgan added: “We have guys in our batting line-up with enough talent and ability to push past that record mark.

“Jos Buttler wouldn’t need as many balls as other players to try to go past it. With the ability and power we have in the side, we have a lot of match-winners, which is something to be proud of and not to be taken for granted.”

England are hopeful Alex Hales will be fit for the final ODI in Cardiff on Saturday. The batsman did not field for 33 overs of Sri Lanka’s innings due to back trouble, which will be assessed again by the ECB medical team tomorrow/on Thursday.
