James Faulkner believes he can shock England in the Ashes after a bright performance in Australia’s Champions Trophy defeat at Edgbaston.

England landed the first punch in the opening game of a possible 27 matches in eight months between cricket’s oldest rivals, winning by 48 runs in Birmingham, but Faulkner’s display improved his chances of claiming an Ashes spot.

The all-rounder took two for 48 before striking an unbeaten 54 from 42 deliveries. It was not enough to rescue the Aussies but it filled Faulkner, 23, with optimism as he considered the cricket that lies ahead.

“I'm a pretty confident sort of character and, once I get on the ground, I back my preparation and my ability to get the job done,” said the Tasmanian. “I suppose they call it the big stage and I do thrive on it.

“I think I've performed pretty well in four-day cricket back home now for a little while. So I'll be trying to grab my opportunity if I'm given it.”

Australia’s next match is against New Zealand on Wednesday, which they are likely to need to win to have a chance of progressing to the semi-finals.

Their uncertain start to the Champions Trophy, along with the back injury that has created doubts about their captain Michael Clarke’s participation, have led many to dismiss Australia’s chances of regaining the Ashes.

England have won three of the last four series and at the weekend, Sir Ian Botham backed them to win at home and Down Under this year. He even claimed that Alastair Cook’s team could complete a 10-0 whitewash.

Yet Australia have an ally in South Africa batsman AB De Villiers. De Villiers’ priority is to help his team beat Pakistan at Edgbaston today but he is confident Australia have a good chance in the Ashes.

“I know the Aussies are up for something big, especially after losing at Edgbaston,” he said. “They’re obviously out of sorts and England are the favourites, but I would never push the Aussies out of the equation. They’re a fighting team and they will be somewhere close to competing in the Ashes.”
