Ireland caused the first major upset of the 2015 Cricket World Cup in the early hours of this morning as they beat West Indies by four wickets in Nelson, New Zealand.

But Irish captain William Porterfield said after his side's first opening Pool B match that he hoped Ireland would begin to be regarded as a premier cricketing side and voiced his disgust at the result being labelled as an "upset".

Porterfield, who was part of Ireland's best World Cup victories against Pakistan, Bangladesh and England, said victory over the West Indies should not come as a shock.

"I actually hate the term upsets," he said. "I don't see this as an upset. We prepared to come into this game to win. We're going to prepare to go into the UAE game to win. It's where we're at. We're looking to pick up two points in every game, and as long as we're doing the right things and building up to that, then we're happy."

He also criticised the way his nation has been treated in the world of cricket, alluding to the fact that Ireland is still regarded as an associate member of the International Cricket Council and is excluded from the exclusive club of elite test-playing nations.

He added: "I don't see why a team has to be an associate and a team has to be a full member. It's like sure, you're ranked or whatever. It's not like that in any other sport, so I don't see why it has to be like that in ours."
