Hashim Amla has announced his resignation as South Africa captain, with AB de Villiers taking over as skipper.

Amla made 201, his best score as captain as the Proteas drew the second Test against England in Cape Town, but announced his retirement immediately after the match.

Amla said: "After careful consideration, I wish to announce I am stepping down as captain of the Proteas Test team with immediate effect. I remain committed to the Proteas team across all formats of the game."

Cricket South Africa chief executive Haroon Lorgat announced that Amla's successor for the remainder of the series against England will be fellow top-order batsman De Villiers.

South Africa won four, drew six and lost four of Amla's 14 Tests as captain.

He said: "This decision was not an easy one to make but I felt I needed to be true to myself.

"I am comfortable with my decision, knowing that I have given my best at all times and will continue to do so."

Amla made 894 runs at an average of 49.66, slightly down from his career mark of 51.13 in 90 Tests. He made three centuries as skipper.

"I feel there is a greater need to work on my own game, thus giving me the opportunity to continue contributing as a batsman," he continued.

"I was deeply honoured when the position was offered to me as this is the pinnacle for any sportsman. I am extremely grateful to have had the privilege of captaining this wonderful team.

"I believe there is still a great deal I can offer to the team and look forward to contributing to their success."
