Graham Onions gets call to replace injured Chris Woakes

Stepping up: Graham Onions has recovered from a career-threatening back injury
10 April 2012

Graham Onions could make his first England appearance for more than a year after being called up today to replace injured Chris Woakes for the rest of England's one‑day tour of India.

Woakes suffered a thigh strain during training on Sunday and returns home having not featured in either of the team's heavy defeats.

That has led to a call-up for Onions, who last played for England in the Cape Town Test against South Africa in January 2010 before suffering a career-threatening back injury. The Durham seamer was called up as cover for James Anderson for the Fourth Test against India in August.

England play their third one-day international tomorrow in Mohali but Onions will link up with the squad in Mumbai ahead of Sunday's penultimate contest of the series.

Meanwhile, all-rounder Samit Patel believes England will save the series tomorrow.

"We must put the two games behind us," he said. "We know we're good enough to compete out here; we know we can turn it around in Mohali. I know if we play to our best, we'll be too strong for them."
