England's Barmy Army have no qualms riling Aussies

10 April 2012

The Barmy Army insist there is nothing wrong with trying to put off opposition players.

But the colourful England fans group have denied they were responsible for the booing of Australia captain Ricky Ponting in the third Ashes Test.

The barracking of Ponting has been criticised as being against the spirit of cricket but Katy Cooke, general manager of the Barmy Army, said it had not come from them.

"We weren't responsible for the booing of Ponting," Cooke said. "From what I can gather it was pretty tongue in cheek.

"He is one of the best, if not the best, batsman in the world and if we can do a bit to get under his skin and stop him concentrating 100% on his batting then we are doing a service to the England team."

Barmy Army say they exist to "make watching cricket more fun" and Cooke revealed they had been endorsed by England captain Andrew Strauss.

"Andrew and (his wife) Ruth Strauss sat down with a couple of our guys after the Lord's test and said, 'You guys rock.'

"I have a framed letter on the wall, hand-written by Michael Vaughan thanking us for all the support we have given him and the team during his captaincy and to carry on the hard work.

"We are supporters of the England cricket team and as long as we get that feedback we're not doing anything wrong."

Although they have been criticised since their inception in 1994 for their behaviour, the Barmy Army operate to strict guidelines.

"We can ban people's membership if they misbehave," Cooke said.

"We have 500 people every day and we only have emails from people saying they were sitting next to us and how much they enjoyed it.

"Our purpose is to get behind the England cricket team."
