Jason Roy will make his Test debut against Ireland at Lord’s next week, but a host of England’s World Cup heroes have been given time off.

Roy is one of three possible debutants in a 13-man squad for the four-day match that also includes James Anderson, who is recovering from a calf injury. Lewis Gregory receives his first call-up, while Olly Stone — who picked up an injury on tour in the Caribbean this year — is in.

Jos Buttler and Ben Stokes are rested ahead of the Ashes which begin at Edgbaston on August 1, but will be part of a 17-man group for a training camp at the FA’s St George’s Park this weekend. The same is true of Mark Wood, who will be out for four-to-six weeks with the side injury he picked up in Sunday’s final. Jofra Archer was also not considered because of his side injury and will rest up in Barbados before possibly featuring in the Second Test. The ECB announced today he has been awarded an increment contract, with a central contract surely to follow.

World Cup winners Jonny Bairstow, Chris Woakes and Moeen Ali are available. Roy is one of three Surrey players in the squad, with his opening partner Rory Burns and Sam Curran.

Jack Leach, like Curran, impressed for the Lions against Australia A and will offer a spin alternative to Moeen.

Leach’s Somerset team-mate Gregory, a seam bowling all-rounder, or Warwickshire paceman Stone look likely to debut as Anderson will only play alongside Stuart Broad if fit.
