England wait over Morgan injury

Eoin Morgan could miss tomorrow’s second Twenty20 international against New Zealand in Hamilton after jarring his back.

Morgan hurt himself in the latter stages of the tourists’ impressive opening win in Auckland on Saturday and was forced to sit out today’s practice.

Should the Irishman fail to recover, Joe Root could step into the batsman’s shoes, while fellow Yorkshireman Jonny Bairstow can expect increased responsibility at the top of the order.

Morgan and Bairstow put on 81 in seven overs in the victory at Eden Park and between them hit five of England’s record 15 sixes.

“I was really pleased with the way I struck the ball,” said Bairstow. “Everyone contributed in all three disciplines.”

Bairstow himself needed minor treatment after a knock on the fingers today but will play tomorrow. For New Zealand, seamer Ian Butler and all-rounder Grant Elliott are available again after shaking off the injuries which ruled them out of the first match.
