Rain denied England the chance of a series whitewash as only 12.2 overs were possible on the final day of the Lord’s Test against Sri Lanka.

The tourists were chasing 362 to win, while England required 10 wickets to complete a 3-0 victory after their wins at Headingley and Durham.

After the morning session was wiped out by rain, Jimmy Anderson removed Kaushal Silva with a delightful inswinger – before the players returned to the pavilion again after just 3.4 overs.

That preceded a fearsome downpour, yet the players were still able to return in mid-afternoon – only for bad light and rain to send them off the field once more.

Apart from Anderson’s wicket, the highlight of a shortened day was Kusal Mendis six into the Mound Stand from Joe Root’s off-spin.

Root and fellow spinner Moeen Ali were bowling because the umpires deemed the light too poor to allow England’s quicks to operate. The match was eventually called off at 5.12pm.

Sri Lanka’s performance has improved throughout the summer but they were still well beaten. They will approach the limited-overs matches with greater optimism, though England will be looking to continue the strides they have made in 50-over and Twenty20 cricket since last year.
