James Anderson will miss next week’s first Test against Pakistan but Middlesex seamer Toby Roland-Jones was called up today for the first time.

The selectors have recalled Gary Ballance, out of the side since he was dropped midway through last year’s Ashes, and he will come into the middle order with Joe Root moving up to No3 in place of Nick Compton.

Anderson suffered a stress fracture of his shoulder blade last month and is not fit enough for the match at Lord’s, which starts next Thursday.

Roland-Jones, 28, comes into the squad, having been in tremendous form for his county this season where he has taken 30 County Championship wickets in nine matches at 29.07.

Selector James Whitaker said: “Toby Roland-Jones has been a consistent performer over the last few years and deserves his chance.”

Squad: A Cook (capt), M Ali, J Bairstow, G Ballance, J Ball, S Broad, S Finn, A Hales, J Root, T Roland-Jones, J Vince, C Woakes.
